A good environmental portrait should be much more than what a person looks like. It should tell a story about who they are and what what they do. It can often be found in a candid photo, but I much prefer to first research, plan and build a relationship with the person.
Group photography is a special challenge. Along with creative posing and lighting, it's about finding and building the right background and setting. That becomes an important part of the storytelling.
